over come the feeling of self-consciousness before you hit
the ball.

Every golfer has
experienced that awful feeling of self-consciousness.
You stand up to the first tee, certain that every eye is
riveted on you, like vultures waiting for you to screw up.
Or you stand over a 3 foot putt; the ones you are supposed
to make, right? And the what-if arises; what would
people think if I missed?
I learned the following technique from Dr. Joe Parent, a
sport psychologist with clients on the PGA, LPGA, and bi.com
tours. He feels that self consciousness and not
knowing what to do about it, is what separates the
successful golfer from the hack.
When it arises, you could try to run away from it, cover it
over, or ignore it; trouble is, that method only makes it
worse. You can't sweep it under a rug!
Dr. Parent suggests the opposite approach; intensify the
subconscious feeling; blow it up, tighten the string, get
more into it. Then, when the feeling becomes so
powerful that you think you can't breath, whoosh, let it go,
let it dissolve. What is left over is a sense of
space, relaxation, almost relief.
Settle into that spacious feeling and go ahead and put a
good swing on it. Your chances of success will improve
dramatically.
